Forget Those Other Film Awards

You've waited patiently enough, right? And you're tired of what Addison DeWitt calls "that film society," which thinks the pudgy and generic Walk the Line is a triumph of editing and the smudgy faces of Cinderella Man an exemplar of on-screen makeup? Or are you just ready for another list of equal and opposite biases, waving a flag for the unsung, and sometimes for the ballyhooed, and occasionally for the widely reviled?

O, lucky day! Here are the Nick's Flick Picks Honorees for 2005, the one (imaginary) black-tie event where Terrence Howard and Todd Solondz are seated together, where the (imaginary) papparazzi crane for the best red-carpet action shots of Hippolyte Girardot and Juliette Welfling, where Best Sound is about dexterity and not merely decibels, and where everyone (imaginarily) goes home happy, because no one ever wins!

Wonderful choices as usual. I really do hope I get the chance to see Off the Map at some point.

You have no idea how much flak I'm taking for not liking Walk the Line more. "Pudgy and generic" does it proud.

I'm glad you picked that screenshot from Junebug for this group. I really loved that opening sequence. "Where did you come from?" Indeed.

yeah the opening to junebug? HOT.
good choices all around. And I guess I have to get off my ass and see Palindromes eventually.

y'all are so mean to Walk the Line! Pudgy and generic? Sure. I'm not arguing. But the music was purty. And as these things go I found it remarkably easy to sit through. Certainly easier than Ray. I credit Miss Type A herself, Reese for helping it go down easy.

The one that stands out amongst these for me is Nathalie Press in My Summer of Love. It's the best performance I've seen all year. I also loved The New World.

The same cannot be said for Palindromes lol.

Bravo Nick, I always enjoy reading your selections because they're so refreshing (in place of the same names being called out over and over again). Lovely to see Malick, Herzog, Duris and other worthy personalities (Especially... CLIFTON COLLINS JR.! Finally!) represented throughout your ballot.

But I especially loved how you acknowledged Embeth Davidtz, who was so radiant and soulful in Junebug. I apreciate that Amy Adams is getting so much attention (she'd be on my list too and hope she wins the Oscar in a shocker a la Marcia Gay Harden 2001), but this award-worthy performance also enhanced the film.

By the way, are you going to be going "Honourable Mentions" this year? It would be interesting to see what other efforts almost made the list.
