Daily Update

Things that have caught my eye today:

1. I've been getting around—who knew?? The Film Experience, Queering the Apparatus, and Six Things all shouted me out today for entirely different reasons. And all of this only days after Modern Fabulousity polled me for a music mix to kickstart a new feature on his site. I am feeling all up in my Sally Field '84 right now; I know y'all Oscar obsessives know what I'm talking about. (What, like I'd have a blog if I didn't dig a little bit of that extra attention now and then?)

2. Meanwhile, I've really gotta return the favor, six times over, to Six Things...which, in today's context, seems quite self-serving. But this is a perfect, morsel-sized treat awaiting you every day from the alluringly anonymous par3182. If you aren't treating yourself to it already, you're missing a monkey-barrel of fun, including this and this and this and this and this and this. I tend to postpone my visits so that there's more to read when I go, but I think I gotta stop doing that.

3. Speaking of blogs that I haven't been giving their due, the inimitable Safire has moved her blog, and I'm so stoopid that I didn't catch on for a while. But not only have I seen and corrected the error of my ways, but she made me laugh till I hurt with today's instruction manual for aspiring porn beyotches. If this were the New York Times, this would be the most e-mailed article.

4. Speaking of the New York Times, somebody got wind of my addiction to Op/Ed and realized how much of my cash they've been missing out on for years... and now there's this Times Select B.S. that keeps all the good content away from the non-paying jimmies like myself. Okay, it's not fair to call it B.S., since it's just good business sense. And I don't mean to feed the myth that the New York Times is the be-all newspaper it would love to be. But how'm I gonna know what Frank Rich is saying??

5. At least IMDB is still free, which is how I know that Kate Winslet turns 30 today. A good way to celebrate is to think of a way you could be more like Kate, and then implement that. Since I'm all about Six Things today, I would say that Kate's six best performances are her contributions to: 1) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, 2) Heavenly Creatures, 3) Jude, 4) Holy Smoke!, 5) Sense and Sensibility, and 6) Hideous Kinky. (If this were a list of the best overall films in which she has appeared, Titanic, which I still unabashedly love, would be at #3, behind Sunshine and Creatures.) Anyway, happy 30th, Kate! Come visit me!

...and finally...

6) I am waiting to hear back about the possibility of having an academic article of mine included in an anthology being published by an actual university press. No more details, as am nervous and worried re: jinxing myself, but I am compulsively hitting "Reload" on my browser while I'm typing this, so I thought you should know. Cross your fingers, Flick Pick fans!

1. Get around "Times Select" exclusivity using Lexis-Nexis, which is still free - so long as you're broke at a research university with wealthy library resources.

2. Kermit the Frog turned 50 today (Oct. 5th).

3. Parminder Nagra (of Bend it Like Beckham, now ER)also turned 30 today! I heart her cuz I think she's got Winslet sensibility...

4. Charlize Theron's got a Hollywood Star as of this week, yes?

5. Start a Rumor Wednesdy:
Katie Holmes convinces her expectant husband Tom that an epidural is a state-of-the art vitamin complex, that fortifies women bodies for baby bearing. Tom insists that he try this epi-durance vitamin himself, to recapture the die-hard die-hopping summer energy which he'll now need more than ever before to deliver his, er, her baby. Katie - womb wide shut - accedes.

6. Congratulations Nick for packing article number #2 Outta the ballpark. (BTW, worked in a backhanded comment - with a smile - to the Reaper this afternoon).

Oh Happy Day!

Oh, I totally agree about that Times Select thing. I want Maureen Dowd and Tom Friedman... and now I have to pay? It's a shame I only get the Times on Sundays.

Whee! I love Kate Winslet. Congrats on getting that article written--hopefully it's published by now.

@Buffange: The Tom-&-Katie Spawn is such a lurid prospect, I can't even let it inside my brain. Don't get me wrong, it's been knocking for 48 hours, but I just won't let it come in out the rain. (And congrats on your countdown!! You'll do great...)

@FFF, who's been rocking the dissertation chapters and reminding the academic world of how important and necessary her voice is: "Womb Wide Shut" is hi.lar.i.ous. Again, I am not allowed to even ponder the alien baby to which it refers, but you got me laughing! And thanks for the Lexis-Nexis tip. You're always there with the technological short-cuts.

@Damion: Thanks for the good luck—it worked! And your NeMLA panel sounds boffo. (Not NAMBLA, you gutter-minds, NeMLA. Click the link, for gosh sakes.)

@A.: Are you my Connecticut neighbor, A.? If so, I've been meaning to write to you, girl! I hope you're doing well... heard some nice words about you recently. And yeah, I miss Maureen and Thomas almost as much as Frank. We'll get around this. (Meanwhile, Dr. S. wins the Florence Nightingale award for copying and pasting Frank's latest essay into an e-mail... that's right, y'all, the Doc is not a baby, unlike yours truly, and she's actually subscribed to Select. Bully for Dr. S.!)

Sorry, Nick, but ... I'm just a reader who reads your blog religiously. If someone you know uses the name "A." then I will use my full initials now. Sorry for the mixup there. You have a GREAT blog!

Hey Nick,
I just had a Ph.D. Victory Lunch with the Connecticut "A", and passed on your good wishes to her. Since our circle of friends includes quite a few "A"s, we also enjoyed a LMAO - ROTF (trans. laughing my ass off, rolling on the floor) round robin interrogation, as we tried to figure out which A among us could have written. Is 'A' the Clem's new Mom "A"? (I love how it's totally okay to name and post pics of infants, the cyber-unitiated, while we adults speak under alluringly anonymous covers of initials and FFFunky acronyms!)

xoxo
srr - p.s. Fall Break has FINALLY started, just in time for a 3 day flooding deluge. oh well, great writing weather, yes?

@AMH: Nice to have you aboard! Sorry about my own mix-up.

@FFF: I'm glad I wasn't the only one who leapt to false conclusions. ;) Oh, and it's pouring here, too.
